ABSTRACT

A recent new collection of intestinal capillariids from the atherinid fish Chirostoma estor Jordan, a type host of Capillaria patzcuarensis Osorio-Sarabia, Perez-Ponce de Leon et Salgado-Maldonado, 1986, from Lake Patzcuaro in Michoacan, Mexico (type locality) made it possible to study in detail the morphology of this insufficiently known nematode parasite. Morphologically identical and apparently conspecific females were also recorded from the goodeid Alloophorus robustus (Bean) from the same locality. All main morphological and biometrical features of this species correspond to Pseudocapillaria tomentosa (Dujardin, 1843) and, therefore, C. patzcurarensis is considered a junior synonym of P. tomentosa. The Mexican specimens are briefly described and illustrated. This Holarctic, little-host specific nematode species may have been introduced into Lake Patzcuaro along with the introduction of carp, Cyprinus carpio L., in the lake.
