ABSTRACT

A total of 2086 specimens of Engraulis anchoita Hubbs et Marini, 1935 (Pisces, Engraulidae), from waters off Argentina and Uruguay were examined for parasitic nematodes. Four species of larval nematodes were found, the anisakids Anisakis simplex (Rudolphi, 1809, det. Krabbe, 1878) s. l. (prevalence 5.85%, mean abundance 2.01), Terranova sp. (prevalence 0.34%, mean abundance 0.003) and Contracaecum, sp. (prevalence 39.7%, mean abundance 2.81) from the body cavity and mesenteries, and the cystidicolid Ascarophis marina (Szidat, 1961) (prevalence 0.05%, mean abundance 0.001) from the stomach. These nematodes are described and illustrated, along with a revision of existing literature concerning nematodes belonging to these genera in the studied area.
